Google Cloud ships the Gemini agent: standing coworkers with identities, budgets, and audit trails
At Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent, a persistent universal agent that plans and completes work across a company's connected systems, with coworker agents carrying identities and controls.
The decision it puts on your desk
Write the identity and budget sheet per agent before any always-on agent enters production. For your procurement file, require audit-level logging inside a tenant you control, and set your first scoped pilot of coworker-style agents by November 15, because every enterprise stack now carries one.
Google Cloud made enterprise agents into a product category on Wednesday, and the announcement carries the controls a CFO asks for first.
At its Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google introduced a new agent class. Reporting described "a persistent universal agent for work that plans and completes tasks across a company's connected business systems," running for hours or days per task.
The model routing list matters for buyers: the agent routes each task to the best model, including Anthropic's Claude, per the event coverage.
What the runtime carries
Migration cost says the design is deliberate.
Coworker agents get dedicated identities and email addresses, plus separate storage, so each one carries a mailbox that can be audited.
"The announcement also carries the control surface that sells: permission, audit, sandbox, and spending controls," reported the recap of the event.
When the permissions audit and the cost cap run inside the same runtime, the buying question moves from capability to governance.
For rivals, pricing sits in service weight: Google owns each enterprise's tenant stack, so its budget view sits where your emails live rather than in a separate dashboard.
The unresolved edge is availability. The reporting said no general availability date was given.
Precedent check: Microsoft announced long-running agent infrastructure two weeks ago, and OpenAI shipped always-on Dots on September 29, so this finishes a month that gave enterprise agents a standing house across every major vendor.
I get the sense the concept settled: agents now run, and the audit view exists whether you want it or not.
