Trump calls AI safety a hoax and promises an AI Force. The split with Sacramento is now public
President Trump said on September 19 that AI safety is a hoax and pledged an AI czar and an AI Force modeled on Space Force, five days after dismissing the pacing debate on social media.
The decision it puts on your desk
Track the president's October appointments for the AI czar role and the name of the executive branch seat, since the position carries real procurement authority. Budget your compliance plan on both tracks: the federal voluntary lane, and the California kill-switch deadline of November 16, which carries a real reporting test you can price against.
President Trump put his answer to the pacing debate in a Saturday appearance: no slowdown, a promise of scale.
He said he will appoint an AI czar and establish an AI Force modeled on Space Force, dismissed AI safety as a hoax, and pledged that the White House "will not hinder or stifle AI growth," the reporting said.
Five days earlier, the same account had called Anthropic's chief executive a "perfect little angel" on Truth Social, mocking the case for restraint.
California moved opposite. Governor Newsom's office said his executive order would "once again... strengthen AI safety for all Americans," and the order set a two-month deadline for recommendations on an emergency shutoff mechanism for frontier models plus onsite third-party auditors.
The two announcements now say different things to the same audience. The federal road says voluntary: build where the market leads. The California road says audited: a state deadline arrives November 16.
Repricing one boundary
Precedent says defense agencies set these initiatives, and the ledger already runs at scale.
Government AI work runs at real numbers: the Pentagon is already lending $5 billion to Fluidstack and running AI targeting at one decision every 3.6 seconds, the reporting said.
An AI force as a service branch would formalize autonomy inside that world, with the same congressional lift as any standing command.
I get the sense the labs read the hoax framing as operating room. The FRONTIER Act's mandatory audits carry three lab endorsements and no White House, the reporting said, and the Speaker took the electricity bill instead.
A companion meeting on the calendar matters, because the president is set to meet President Xi on September 24, with an AI hotline and nuclear red lines from the Brookings-Fudan proposal on the table.
