OpenAI races to lock in a $30B raise above $1.4T, ahead of Anthropic's IPO
OpenAI is racing to lock in investor commitments for a raise of roughly $30 billion that could value the company above $1.4 trillion, ahead of rival Anthropic's expected mid-November IPO, Reuters reported.
The decision it puts on your desk
Build your two-column view of the frontier before November 30, one private and one public. If you sell into both labs, price urgency into the private side before the raise closes, because contracts signed during a funding window carry different renewal leverage. If you invest, treat the no-disclosure discount as a real cost, not a rounding note.
The private-market race sharpened on Friday, and the reason is on the calendar.
"OpenAI is racing to lock in investor commitments for a raise of about $30 billion that could value the company above $1.4 trillion," Reuters reported, "ahead of rival Anthropic's expected mid-November IPO."
The number reworks September's talks. Last month's reporting carried working talk ranges above $1.2 trillion, and the company's own September figure ran as high as $1.5 trillion, so the anchor sits at a different height now.
Follow the money into the pairing.
Anthropic's filing was public by late October, so OpenAI's private round now stands next to a listing with audited numbers. Buyers can open both sets of books from the same window.
Precedent explained how the raise reached this shape: the company's own September round priced $852 billion after a March raise, and revenue questions had already surfaced in earlier reporting, so capital moved above the risk numbers.
What private capital gets that public capital cannot
Ecosystem check: the two labs now sit on opposite investor tracks.
OpenAI's financing runs on private valuations with no disclosure deadline. Anthropic's IPO carries a roadshow calendar, a price-target exercise, and quarterly reporting duties from the filing onward.
For investors, the trade prices from the buying side. A private raise locked in before a public listing carries less scrutiny than the same money paid after one, and early commitments are the cheaper tier during a closing window.
The unresolved edge is the round itself. No confirmed closing exists, and every new report resets the headline number.
I get the sense both labs are now pricing the same trade in opposite directions.
